Income? Career success? Genetics? Harvard researchers have spent more than 85 years trying to answer exactly that question — and the answer that keeps coming back, generation after generation, isn’t any of those. It’s the quality of our relationships.

The Longest Study on Happiness Ever Conducted

The Harvard Study of Adult Development began in 1938, following hundreds of participants — and eventually their spouses and children — through their entire lives. It’s the longest-running study of its kind in the world, and its central finding has held up for over eight decades: people who are more socially connected to family, friends, and community are measurably happier, healthier, and live longer than those who are less connected. The researchers found that close relationships protect people against chronic disease, mental decline, and depression — sometimes more powerfully than diet or exercise. As the study’s current director, psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, puts it, loneliness itself behaves like a health risk, on par with smoking.

What’s just as interesting is what didn’t predict a good life: wealth, fame, or even how smooth the relationships were. Some of the most content, longest-lived participants in the study were in relationships full of disagreement and friction — because what mattered wasn’t the absence of conflict, but whether people felt they could genuinely rely on each other.

Why Shared Challenge Builds Trust Faster Than Small Talk

If relationships are this important, the next question is practical: how do you actually build them, especially with colleagues you didn’t choose and don’t see outside of work? The research points to a specific mechanism — shared, slightly uncomfortable challenge.

Trust isn’t built through comfort. It’s built through moments where people see how each other behaves under a bit of pressure — solving a problem together, navigating an obstacle, relying on someone to hold up their end. Psychologists who study group dynamics describe this as a kind of accelerated intimacy: a shared physical or mental challenge compresses months of “getting to know someone” into a couple of hours, because it forces real cooperation, real vulnerability, and real dependence on one another — the exact ingredients the Harvard research found at the center of lasting bonds.

The Barriers Are Predictable — and Solvable

Most teams don’t lack the desire to connect. They lack the structure for it. Distance keeps people apart. Full calendars crowd out anything that isn’t strictly necessary. Being vulnerable in front of colleagues can feel risky, especially without a low-stakes setting to do it in. Left alone, these barriers tend to win — which is exactly why “let’s get to know each other better” so rarely happens on its own.

What changes the outcome is a deliberately designed shared experience: one with a clear, friendly challenge, a bit of healthy competition, and enough structure that vulnerability feels safe rather than exposed.

Designing for Connection, Not Just Fun

This is the thinking behind our team building experiences at Mjøsli. Whether your group is navigating obstacles together on the Nordic Trail, working together to unmask the culprits in Wanted, or competing as a team through the Winter Games, each format is built around the same principle the research points to: real cooperation, a bit of friendly pressure, and enough shared challenge that people leave knowing each other differently than when they arrived.

It’s the difference between a day that’s fun to talk about and a day that actually changes how your team works together afterward.

Want to build that kind of trust in your own team? See our team building experiences or visit AreteVei to explore everything we offer at Mjøsli.

The Science of Connection: Why Shared Challenges Build Stronger Teams If you had to guess the single strongest predictor of […]

[1

post-758","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized

The Science of Connection: Why Shared Challenges Build Stronger Teams | AreteVei

<meta name="description" content="The 85-year Harvard study on happiness found one factor mattered more than money or fame.
